Leadership Wisdom from an Unexpected Place

This is our final blog post for 2025. The holidays are upon us. It’s a time to pause, breathe, and look for inspiration as this year gives way to the next.

One of the highlights of my year, without fail, is attending the Tracker Academy graduation in the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet.

It is always unforgettable. The setting, the people, the sense of possibility. The students have worked incredibly hard, and the culmination of their journey is this moment: standing tall in front of their families, instructors, and partners, ready to move into the next chapter of their lives.

This year, something extraordinary happened.

A young man from rural southern Mozambique, 20-year-old Dário Cavele, delivered the keynote address. And without exaggeration, it was the most inspiring speech I heard all year.

Dário grew up in Mapulanguene. A quiet village surrounded by bushveld, birdsong, and wide horizons. Life was simple, he said, but full of values. Every day he walked through the bush to school, not knowing that the sounds and signs around him would one day become his calling.

After finishing school, there were no opportunities.

He spent a year at home, waiting, hoping. Then Tracker Academy, in partnership with Karingani Game Reserve, opened a door that would change everything.

He described the early days of 2025 at the Tracker Academy. The doubts, the fear, and then the extraordinary power of belonging. “Teamwork became our greatest strength,” he said. “We supported each other, shared knowledge, and grew together.”

Weekends were filled with singing and dancing … not as students, but as family. Then came Londolozi, with its intensity, high standards, and fatigue. The pressure was real, but resilience grew.

They began to see themselves not as trainees, but as future conservation professionals.

Dário spoke of lessons that go far beyond tracking:

  • Tracking is more than following animal signs; it is learning to observe deeply.
  • Every sound tells a story, if you are patient enough to listen.
  • And when you lose your track, go back to your last track.

Then he offered one of the most profound insights I heard this year:

“Rivers don’t drink their own water, trees don’t eat their own fruit, flowers don’t spread fragrance for themselves. Like nature, our mission is not for us alone … it’s for future generations.”

For a 20-year-old to stand up and declare this with such clarity was humbling.

Even more extraordinary – at the beginning of the year he could speak very little English.

As we close 2025, his message feels like a gift.

  • A reminder to stay curious.
  • To return to the last clear track when we feel unsure.
  • To invest in others, because nothing meaningful is ever achieved alone.
  • And to recognise that our work, whether in business, conservation, leadership, or family, is part of something bigger than ourselves.

The world needs more people like Dário. More humility, more courage, more service.

May his words guide you into the new year.

Never stop tracking your life!
